Things I've seen this week
Friday, September 2, 2011 at 5:00AM Today's post is a jumble of things that caught my eye this week. Let's start with one of my favorite things - CAKE!
Check out this ombre cake I saw on 6th Street Design School. So pretty, right? The whole birthday party is really impressive. I have found the hardest part of planning a themed birthday party is actually sticking to the theme. I come up with too many ideas and stray away from the original theme. This party sticks to the theme in every aspect without becoming overdone.

While perusing Pinterest I found this creative furniture idea:

Simple and smart - especially if you are on the shorter side like myself. I clicked on the link to see where you can buy this item but the link was dead...If anyone knows feel free to post the info in the comments.

Speaking of Pinterest, what do y'all think of it?

So far I have a love - hate relationship with it. I love browsing the site for inspiration but I think it is hard to find the original sourcing information since it just links back to the most recent source which is often not the original source. And Pinterest is a comment stealer! Y'all are a pretty quiet bunch anyway so I don't get tons of comments but I have seen several images that I posted linked back to my blog with comments on Pinterest even though no one actually commented on my blog. While I would love to have the comments on my blog, it is nice to see the re-posts on Pinterest because it lets me know that you are reading even if you are quiet :) And I really can't complain about not having many comments because I am terrible about commenting on other blogs even though I read them religiously. I am trying to make an effort to comment more.
Of course, the other con is that once you start browsing Pinterest you can not get out of there! I start searching for one quick item and the next thing I know an hour has gone by! Luckily, I have time to spare these days since a large part of my day is sitting around nursing. Pinterest has definitely made that time go by quickly.
Overall, I think I am a Pinterest fan because it really is a great source of inspiration for anything you may be interested in.

I made this side dish for dinner this week.

Pink Parsley
Paul and I both loved it but I was surprised that it didn't go over well with Riley. She is a huge rice lover but, unbeknownst to me, it turns out she is a purist. ONLY plain rice with butter - no additions even if the additions are items that she likes such as cheese and zucchini. I served ours with sauteed tilapia and a side salad. Despite Riley's objections, it is definitely something I will make again because it was really good and really easy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something that does warrant Riley's approval?

The Ramona & Beezus movie. The Ramona Quimby books were some of my favorites when I was little so I decided to TiVo this movie for Riley when I saw it on a movie channel earlier this week. Although it isn't a cartoon and it is probably aimed towards older children, it was rated G and it was free so I gave it a shot. If she wasn't into it, no big deal. To say she loves it is an understatement. We have had many conversations that revolve around "Ramoooona" this week. I don't know why, but it gives me so much pleasure to see Riley love something that I also loved as a child. And as a mom, if I have to see a movie repeatedly, I would much rather see this face over and over again

instead of this one.
John Corbett plays Ramona's dad and he is so cute in this movie :) Smart casting in my opinion.

Do you have fun Labor Day weekend plans? We have family visiting for the first part of the weekend and then we are heading out for a little getaway. I hope you have a great holiday weekend!

I have to admit that I usually don't change the comment when I pin something, unless I think it's stupid, ha, ha! But, I've tried to find you on there and can't? I would follow you if I could find your name when I searched! Anyway, have a great weekend!
I also loved Ramona and Beezus, and don't forget about Henry. Beverly Cleary's books were always my favorites. I remember reading them as a 2nd or 3rd grader. I think Megan liked them also. It is fun to see your child enjoy something you also enjoyed as a child. Good for Riley...she'll enjoy reading about Ramona and Beezus in a few years. :) Enjoy the holiday weekend! Kiss the girls for me!
Rach, I've searched for you, too!! Please remedy.
Love & have a great trip!
I was actually just going to email you and ask if you were on Pinterest! You have such great style - I love everything you do.

I am a religious reader and quiet commenter. I will try to be better!
I read your blog ALL THE TIME, i love seeing pics of your sweet family & i really like your design style. Youe home is beyond gorgeous, I'd love to see more of it! And i really enjoy your blog. But this is the first time I have commented. Sorry for "lurking". Thanks for sharing your life & aesthetic. Cheers.
I mostly read blogs on an iPad and can't figure out how to use Pintrest on a tablet. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the comments y'all! I do have a Pinterest account but I haven't started pinning anything yet so that is probably why y'all can't find me :) Laura, since I am not pinning yet I haven't tried it from my IPad but I just read this article
http://blog.hgtv.com/design/2011/08/30/tomkat-studio-my-interview-with-pinterest-co-founder-ben-silbermann/
where the founder of Pinterest says there are "big" changes coming and some of the commenters are hopeful that they changes will include an IPad app. So, I guess you aren't the only one who has trouble pinning from your IPad. Once I get started on Pinterest I will let y'all know - I would love to follow all of you as well :)

i'm new to your blog -- love it!!! i happen to love pinterest. when you don't have a blog, there's no simple way to save and easily access photos (from the internet or blog posts). i think it's brilliant! that said, i find it frustrating when i click on something i like and it doesn't link to anything, or it links to a blog, but not to the blog post where it was originally found. i wish pinterest would do a little tutorial on how to do that. i ALWAYS click on the title of the blog post i'm reading, so i'm accessing that specific post and not the whole blog (does that make sense) and that way, whatever i'm "pinning" will link back to the original post. if the blogger provides any information about it, i always post that as well. like i said, i wish pinterest would explain to people how to do that. even bloggers are guilty of pinning things that don't link back to the original source.
