Happy Closets

Do these images make you as happy as they make me?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we have decided to give Riley a playroom. What I did not mention is that her future playroom is currently our master bedroom! I really wanted Riley's playroom to be on the main floor of our house and the only logical place it could go is in our bedroom. So, Paul and I are going to move upstairs. This makes sense for several reasons and one of those is that there is a large unfinished space off of one of the upstairs bedrooms that would make an unbelievable closet!

I have never been fortunate enough to have a grown-up, organized, walk-in closet with built-ins, etc. And when I see closets like the ones above, it makes my heart race. I would smile every time I walked in my closet if it looked like one of those! But I have realized it isn't luxurious materials that make me so happy. It is the organization of space. For example, I think the image below is a little over the top in terms of materials - I don't need expensive cabinetry, granite countertops and a flat screen TV in my closet!

Crowne Closets and Cabinetry

I just want a place for everything and a closet that is organized and functional.

So my question is this: Should I go with a closet system or should I have my contractor custom build our closet??? Have any of you used a closet system? Do you love/hate it??? I like the idea of having my contractor build it so that we can get exactly what we want but the systems look so easy!

What are your thoughts/experiences with closet systems? I would really appreciate your feedback!

Oh, what I wouldn't give for closet space! I love that one of those closets apparently belongs to Mrs. Grinch (who wears only green) and one to Mr. Bland (who wears only beige). If you do use a closet system, let me know how it goes---I'd be interested as to how one would work for my closet (of the non-walk-in variety):)

I disagree with you that you don't need granite countertops, built in cabinets and a flat screen tv; those are completely neccessary ;) no really, my thought is that both options will increase your home's value and function. if I was planning on living in a home for 10-20+ years, I'd go custom.

I just found you through your Design*Sponge bathroom feature and I. Love. Your. Blog!

We are wrapping up a whole-house remodel where we converted our garage into a master suite with a walk-in closet. It's not huge, but enough space. We originally had plans for my husband to do custom built-ins but he lacked the time so we decided to go with a closet system for now. We just used the Closet Maid system from home depot and mixed and matched pieces to get enough hanging space and shelves for each of us. It was so easy and inexpensive (compared with doing custom wood work) and turned out so well that I think we'll leave it rather than replacing it down the road with anything custom.

And now I'm inspired to go reorganize my closet by color...

Ok, so I had to chime in on this one! I might be biased since in addition to design, I also work for California Closets but I say...they are pros at what they do so let them do it! They can totally customize your closet to your needs and you can have a say in the design (consultation is free so why not?). Plus the melamine (I know, gag) really is the BEST product b/c it contracts/expands with temperature where wood can buckle, warp, need sanding, refinishing, etc. You can always get a "basic" system then add to it later with drawers and other bells and whistles. Whatever you do...don't do wire. That sh*t is a mess. Good luck!

I may be biased because I am married to a general contractor - but there is nothing like a custom-build closet made to your specifications. you won't have any wasted space and i think you can get the most bang for your buck.
those closets you featured are lovely!
